BitLocker recovery: what to do when your PC asks for a key

A blue BitLocker recovery screen can feel alarming, but it does not necessarily mean your files are gone. These steps help you identify the right recovery key without sharing sensitive information.

1. Check that it is a BitLocker recovery screen

Look for “BitLocker recovery” and a request for a 48-digit recovery key. Record the first eight characters of the recovery key ID; this is a label for matching keys, not the recovery key itself.

2. Check your Microsoft account on another device

  1. On a phone or another computer, visit Microsoft’s recovery-key page and sign in to the Microsoft account used on the locked device.
  2. Compare the displayed key ID to the ID on the locked PC. If you have multiple Microsoft accounts, check the account that set up the device.
  3. Enter the matching 48-digit recovery key into the locked computer yourself.

3. Is it a work or school computer?

The recovery key may be held by your organization. Contact its IT administrator; do not reset a managed device without their approval. A previously saved printout or USB drive may also contain the key.

Protect your files

Do not post your recovery key, password, or one-time sign-in codes in a form or message. Avoid clearing the TPM, changing security keys, or resetting Windows while you are trying to preserve encrypted files. Resetting a device can remove files. Microsoft cannot recreate a lost recovery key.
