Windows blue screen: steps to take before trying a fix

A blue screen is a symptom, not a diagnosis. Driver changes, hardware problems, updates and other causes can produce stop errors, so the error message and timing matter.

1. Photograph the stop code

Write down the stop code and any named file shown on the screen. Note whether the crash happens during gaming, startup, sleep, or a Windows update. A photo is useful if the computer restarts quickly.

2. Think about what changed

Did the issue begin after a driver or Windows update, a new game, or a hardware change? Unplug nonessential USB devices and restart once. Do not repeatedly install random drivers or registry cleaners.

3. If Windows starts, protect your files

Back up important files if the PC is stable enough. Check Windows Update and review any recent changes. If you can’t stay in Windows, Advanced startup can offer Safe Mode or other recovery tools; some options require the BitLocker recovery key.

4. Know when to stop

If you see repeated crashes, unusual noises, burning smells, or liquid damage, power off and describe the symptoms before continuing. Avoid a Windows reset or drive format until you understand potential data loss.
