Gaming PC black screen or Secure Boot error? Start here

A gaming PC can display a black screen or a Secure Boot requirement for several different reasons. Separate a display problem from a Windows or firmware issue before changing settings.

1. Check the screen and connections

Confirm that the monitor is powered on and set to the input your computer uses. Check that the display cable is firmly seated. If your desktop has a dedicated graphics card, check which video output your monitor is connected to.

2. Capture the exact message

If a game says Secure Boot is required, photograph the message. If Windows starts, press Windows + R, type msinfo32, and look for “BIOS Mode” and “Secure Boot State.” These are observations; changing settings is a separate step.

3. Protect access before firmware changes

Secure Boot, TPM and firmware changes can trigger a BitLocker recovery prompt or leave a system unable to start. Before changing anything, make sure you have your recovery key and a backup. Do not clear keys, clear the TPM, or update firmware based on a generic guide.

4. For crashes during games

Note the game, error message and whether the system freezes, restarts or loses video. Check that cooling vents are clear and review recent software or driver changes. The right next step depends on the symptoms and hardware.
